The Lake District, November 2020

2020 has been an odd year, dare I say a terrible year, for all of us. Photography has suffered too because of lock-downs, travel restrictions after lock-downs, the madness of places being so busy when travel was permitted, and then just losing the mo-jo too.

So in November we had a week in a cottage near Esthwaite Water as a break from home and to get out with the camera. And then, half way though, another lockdown. As we were already away we were able to stay, and stayed local to our location.

The weather was challenging too, with lots of rain, flooded roads, and the lakes being the highest I have ever seen. But it didn't stop me, and considering the difficulties I came away with some images I am happy with. Here are just a few highlights..

Wastwater-The Best View in England

On what was the sunniest day of the whole week we had a leisurely day, driving over the fells and enjoying the scenery, and what stunning scenery. We actually ended up at Wastwater, voted England's best view, and it isn't hard to see why. I was standing here a year to the day ago and it was similar conditions with a band of light breaking through. This just had to be a long exposure shot....

The sheep didn't want us to leave. It's always funny that they insist on just running in front of you even with a car right behind them.

A trip to Blea Tarn which was actually very close to the cottage. With all the rain the previous day the embankments were just a bog, so it was a muddy walk. It was a fish scale sky, that heavy textured cloud formation, and towards sunset a thick band of cloud started to form on the right. Typical, and just as I was hoping it would clear, two swimmers arrived and ruined that wonderfully still water. Still, waiting paid off, they left, and as the sun got low the sky exploded with colour. It was so intense it illuminated the whole scene, and believe it or not I have actually reduced the vibrancy of these a little, it just didn't look real.

This is one of my favourite locations and I felt it was a must for Autumn. This image along with the header image, and quite a few others, were all captured on a beautiful misty morning. The calm water was only disturbed by a couple of swans swimming through. A light mist floated over the water, and after a fairly modest sunrise, the golden oaks exploded with colour as the sun rose over the horizon.

That was a magnificent morning. By around 10am a blue sky was broken by beautiful steely grey dark clouds reflecting in the water, with mist floating by the fells. After quite a few shots, and time enjoying the peace, it was time to head back for breakfast and lots of coffee.

Our cottage was not far from here just on the left, so it was a spot we visited a few times. This particular morning the sky filled with colour and reflected on the water. It was wonderfully quiet, with just a fisherman slowly floating by as he fished.

Centenary Stone Derwentwater

Another sunny day and a visit to Derwentwater, not expecting to get too much because it was so bright. Knowing how high the water levels were I went to check out the stones, installed by the National Trust to celebrate 100 years. They were surrounded by water and a seagull was rather interested in enjoying the scenery too. This was a challenging shot because it was so bright and I wanted to include the seagull. Quite a few not so great shots later, I got one I was very pleased with with the soft tones and the layers of Borrowdale in the background.

Grassmere

A hand held image, it is actually the first time I've taken any images of Grassmere, and with those wonderful reflections and Autumnal colours it was worth a quick stop.

Windermere

The Esthwaite side of Windermere at the ferry was wonderful. It was so peaceful and calm and I had three visits here, shooting the boats at sunrise. This image for me captured the peace and the tranquility with a swan gracefully looking for food.

Rydal Water

During the stay in the Lake District I wanted to make the most of Autumn, and I did actually get quite a few shots of woodlands, reflections and Autumn colours, but this is one I have wanted for quite a while, the boathouse on Rydal Water, with those beautiful colours and luckily a calm day for reflections
